• STR Hong Kong Presented Seminar on New Amendment A6 To EN 71-1 And BS 7272 Safety Requirements
Specialized Technology Resources-HK held a technical seminar for toys and children's products safety on July 18 & August 1, 2008. This seminar presented the latest changes covered in the New Amendment A6:2008 to EN 71-1:2005 Safety of Toys, and the new revision of the Pen Caps safety standards BS 7272-1 & 2:2008. Read more.

• United States: Children's Gasoline Burn Prevention Act
On July 17, 2008, President George Bush signed into law H.R. 814, the Children’s Gasoline Burn Prevention Act, making it Public Law No: 110-278. This law takes effect on January 17, 2009. Read more.
• New Jersey Adopts Flame Resistance Standards for Tents and Sleeping Bags
On April 1, 2008, the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs adopted new rules pertaining to the flame resistance of tents and sleeping bags. Since May 5, 2008 these rules are in effect. The adopted new rules are not subject to any federal standards or requirements. Read more.
• EU Risk Assessment Guidelines for Non-Food Consumer Products
The European Commission has started a consultation on the draft of the Risk Assessment Guidelines specifically designed for risk assessors from the member state market surveillance authorities dealing with non-food consumer products within the framework of Directive 2001/95/EC on General Product Safety. • Congressional Lawmakers Reach Agreement on Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008
After meeting in conference for several weeks, U.S. House and Senate conferees have resolved differences between two bills aimed at overhauling the Consumer Product Safety Commission and have reached final agreement on the provisions which were deemed the most difficult to reconcile. The bill has been sent to President Bush who is expected to sign it. Read more.
• Delaware Passes Children's Toy Safety Act
On July 16, 2008, Delaware Governor Ruth Ann Minner signed into law, the Children’s Toy Safety Act, which prohibits the sale and distribution of toys that are harmful to and threaten the health of children. Read more.
• The UK Magnetic Toys (Safety) Regulations 2008
The UK Magnetic Toys (Safety) Regulations 2008 No 1654 has been published and came into effect on July 21, 2008. These regulations give effect to the Commission Decision 2008/239/EC of April 21, 2008 requiring member states to ensure that magnetic toys, placed or made available on the market, display a warning about health and safety risks they pose. ... • EN71-1 Mechanical and Physical Properties Amendments 5&6
EN71-1 Mechanical and physical properties has now been amended by A5 & A6. These two amendments are expected to be published as A6 in the BSI standard BS EN 71-1 in the next few weeks. Read more.
• Argentina Bans Phthalates in Toys and Child-Care Articles
Argentina's Ministry of Health has issued Resolution No. 583/2008 dealing with the manufacture, import, export, marketing or free distribution of child-care articles and toys.
This resolution will be enforced on September 9, 2008. Read more.

• STR Shanghai obtains CBTL Certificate from IECEE
STR is pleased to announce that our Shanghai laboratory has successfully obtained the CB Testing Laboratory certificate by The Worldwide System for Conformity Testing and Certification of Electrotechnical Equipment and Components (IECEE), effective July 15, 2008 to Oct. 11, 2010. Read more.

• New Labeling Requirements for Padded Undergarments in Canada
Under new amendments to Ontario Regulation 218/01 (Upholstered and Stuffed Articles), the Technical Standards & Safety Authority (TSSA), which administers this law, has incorporated a Director's Order on padded undergarments and has updated a number of new requirements, including definitions, labeling and compliance issues. • Delaware Enacts Labeling Requirements For Apparel Containing Real Fur
On July 3, 2008, Governor Ruth Ann Minner signed into law, an Act to amend Title 6 of the Delaware Code Relating to Prohibited Trade Practices. The purpose of this Act is to ensure that the retail consumer has notice prior to purchasing apparel that contains real animal fur. These requirements become effective on June 1, 2010. Read more.
