• Melamine Concerns Prompt Tighter Regulations Worldwide
The recent discovery of melamine tainted milk powder and dairy products produced in China has raised public concern worldwide. A number of countries worldwide have either banned or are stepping up monitoring of China-sourced dairy products over fears they could contain milk contaminated with the chemical. Read more.
• Country of Origin Labeling (COOL)
Effective September 30, 2008, the 2002 and 2008 Farm Bills require Country of Origin Labeling for all of beef (including veal), lamb, pork, chicken, goat, perishable agricultural commodities (fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables), peanuts, pecans, ginseng, and macadamia nuts. Read more.
• Dietary Supplements Industry Outlook
The Council for Responsible Nutrition held its annual symposium on dietary supplements earlier this month in New Mexico. Industry experts who participated in a panel discussion concluded that the dietary supplements industry will likely experience changes in consumer activity in the next 18-24 months. Read more.

• California Proposition 65 Enforcement Actions
During 2008, several retailers made California Proposition 65 consent agreements resulting in the reformulation of lead requirements or Proposition 65 warnings. Read more.

• California Enacts Product Recall Safety and Protection Act
On September 29, 2008, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law Assembly Bill 1860, the Product Recall Safety and Protection Act, which takes effect immediately.

• Phase-in Anticipated for Enforcement of Declaration Requirements Under Amended Lacey Act
Declaration requirements under the recently amended Lacey Act (the United States’ oldest wildlife protection statute), originally effective December 15, 2008, may be delayed until April 1, 2009, or later, under a plan involving the development of an electronic system for gathering the required data. The International Organization for Standardization has recently published an amendment to ISO 6330:2000,
Domestic washing & drying procedures for textile testing. The effective date of ISO 6330:2000/Amd.1:2008 is

• Standard Update: ISO 105-E04:2008 - Colour Fastness to Perspiration
The International Organization for Standardization's ISO 105-E04:1994/ Cor.1:2002 has been withdrawn and is now replaced with ISO 105-E04:2008 which specifies a method for determining the resistance of the colour of textiles to the action of human perspiration. Read more.
