• STR US Launches New Website
STR is pleased to announce the launch of a new website – www.STRQuality.com. In January 2009, two of our subsidiaries, CSCC and Shuster Laboratories, transitioned to the STR name. The new website converges our testing, quality assurance and responsible sourcing capabilities and supports STR's building of a unified brand throughout the world.
This new comprehensive website will better reflect our single, global brand and all our services. As this website continues to evolve, STR will continue enhancing value-added features to help us communicate more effectively with our clients and build stronger business relationships across the globe.

• CPSC Exempts Nursing Pillows from 16 CFR 1500 Regulation
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a final rule to exempt the Boston Billow Nursing Pillow and substantially similar nursing pillows from the commission's ban on infant cushions and pillows under 16 CFR 1500. This rule became effective on December 19, 2008. Read more.
• European Parliament Backs Toy Safety Directive
A new draft Directive on toy safety has won the support of the Members of the European Parliament. Under the new directive, manufacturers will have to ensure that toys are not harmful or toxic to children’s health, and Member States will have to carry out stricter checks on all toys that enter the EU market. • New FDA Guidance Documents Available
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced the availability of two new guidance documents: "Guidance for Industry: Substantiation for Dietary Supplement Claims Made Under Section 403(r)(6) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act" and "Guidance for Industry: Labeling OTC Human Drug Products--Questions and Answers". • FDA Revises Color Additives Requirements
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has revised its requirements for cochineal extract and carmine. This regulation is effective January 5, 2011. Read more.
• Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) – Final Rule
The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture has issued a final rule for the mandatory Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) program required by the 2002 and 2008 Farm Bills. The final rule is published in the January 15, 2009, Federal Register and is effective on March 16, 2009. Read more.

• CPSC Publishes Final Rule to Amend 16 CFR Part 1303
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has published a final rule to amend its regulations at 16 CFR Part 1303, Ban of Lead-Containing Paint and Certain Consumer Products Bearing Lead-Containing Paint. The rule is effective on August 14, 2009. Read more.
• State of Illinois Passes New Lead and Mercury Prohibitions
On December 23, 2008, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich signed into law Senate Bill 2860, now Public Act 095-1019, which amends the state’s Lead Poisoning Prevention Act and Mercury-added Product Prohibition Act.

STR Shenzhen is accredited to ISO/IEC 17020:1998 as type "A" inspection body for the competence to provide inspection services for consumer goods as of December 4, 2008. • BS 8479: 2008 Textiles – Method for Determination of Propensity of Fabrics to Snagging
A new British standard was published on November 30, 2008 that provides a method to determine a fabric's propensity to snagging and other surface related defects. Read more.
EU Regulations
• European Commission - Reduction of Standby Energy Consumption
The European Commission has adopted new requirements to reduce the energy consumption of household electrical and electronic equipment in standby and off modes (Commission Regulation 1275/2008). These requirements are expected to reduce standby electricity consumption by almost 75% by 2020.

Packaging/Labeling
• Changes to the Requirements for the Classification, Labeling and Packaging of Chemical Products
As part of the process of harmonization of chemical legislation alongside REACH, Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on classification, labeling and packaging of substances and mixtures will replace the existing Dangerous Substances Directive 67/548/EEC and the Dangerous Preparations Directive. Read more.

• Consultation on Proposed Revisions to WEEE Regulations
The U.K. Department for Business Enterprise & Regulatory Reform has published a consultation on proposed revisions to the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations. The closing date for responses to the consultation is April 6, 2009. Read more.
